Founded in 2002, Òran began as an alumni offshoot of the Kokopelli Youth Choir, but it has since developed into a group made up of adults from all over Edmonton and the surrounding area. Each brings a different viewpoint to the group, but all are united in their passion for singing. The choir stresses the same philosophical goals as its younger counterpart, striving to achieve musical excellence and artistic integrity, as well as combining new interpretive techniques with more traditional choral expertise. Above all, the group is dedicated to sharing joy in song with each other, with other choirs, and with audiences around Edmonton and across Canada.
Òran has toured regularly throughout its history, with stops as close to home as Red Deer and Banff, ranging as far as Halifax, Cuba, and Germany. Plans for the current season include several engagements with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, as well as a tour to St. John’s, Newfoundland to participate in Podium, Canada’s biennial choral conference, in July 2018.
As one of two auditioned adult choir ensembles in the Kokopelli family, Òran is a more active and performance-focused choir. (Those seeking choral excellence with a somewhat lighter workload should consider Vacilando.) While we accept auditions from all singers 20 years and older, the choir is primarily made up of younger adults in their 20s and 30s.
